California sea lions vary greatly in size depending on the gender of the animal. Females weigh only 200 pounds, whereas males weigh 3 times as much. Both males and females tend to have a dark brown coat, but females often have a slightly lighter coat.
The California seal lion's diet probably varies depending on availability. It will eat both fish and cephalopods, and hunts during day and night.
The western coast of North America is the home of the California seal lion. Its range extends from British Columbia down to the southern end of California.
California sea lions are social animals, living in groups along the coast that grow especially large during breeding season.
