 The order Columbiformes contains 300 species of doves and pigeons that span all the continents except Antarctica. The name comes from the Latin word columba, meaning "dove". Members of this order vary in social habits, with some being solitary and others quite gregarious . Males and females are about the same size, and the females lay between 1 and 3 eggs.
