The members of this family are collectively known as manatees. They are large animals and live relatively solitary lives. They live in shallow water and feed primarily on grasses. They have small eye and probably rely on short hairs to pick up vibrations in order to keep up with their surroundings. They have a split upper lip used in gathering food. They communicate with each other primarily by touch.
